Midnight on the Water is a beautiful old cross-tuned fiddle waltz. It was written by Luke Thomasson, Benny Thomasson's Grandfather.

Midnight on the Water is definitely one of the prettiest fiddle tunes I have ever heard.

I am playing it in Drop D tuning (DDAD).

  • Great tone to this one. Liked it.

  • @slithyj Thank you very much.

  • Hey there! Good job on the song! Just FYI - Benny was my grandfather and Luke my great grandfather - Luke was Benny's dad :)

  • Hey Tauvy, That's awesome. I guess I must have gotten my story mixed up. At least I got the right name. I never got a chance to meet Benny, but I did get to jam with Jerry at the Grand Master's a couple of years ago. It was a great time!

  • Awesome, Jerry is my dad! :) Glad you had a good time. I also never got a chance to meet him, as he passed about 3 months after I was born - but the legacy is immortal and it's that part of my heritage that drives the music in me today.

  • Great to meet you Tauvy. It's so cool to have music in your family. Hopefully we will meet in person someday. Tell Jerry that Vi says Hi!

  • Hey Tauvy,

That's awesome. I got to jam with Jerry at the Grand Masters a couple of years ago. It was a great time.

    Thanks for the Comment!

  • its 2 and 4 on the D string

  • Tuning on this tune is DDAD, and the f# to a is played a couple of different ways. On the middle D string, I either play it 2-2 shifting from first to 3rd position, or 2-4 staying in first position.

Looking forward to your post of Midnight on the Water.
