"You haven't really watched StarTrek unless you watched it in it's German original!"
1998. Germany. Bonn.
A group of friends comes together to film their third parody to the classic Star Trek series. Having done this before twice already the team behind the production is pretty secure by now in what they are doing. And yet - this time something is different...
... *I* am in it!
Knowing the guys for a while at that point in time and being a big fan of their first two movies I was delighted to get the chance to become an extra in "Shadowplay" and prove to everyone how professional I am when it comes to get shot before the first half minute of the movie (including the production team's logo) is over.
But that's not all - later I even got a *second* role as one of the Starfleet engineers who got lost crawling through the Jeffries tubes of the Enterprise. (apparently there's several temporal anomalies in those tubes as well - note that everyone in that group has a uniform from a different era! This becomes most obvious in the character of engineer Jacques Letstips who wears a cowskin and has a Starfleet insignia made of stone pinned to it!)
Seeing the movie again after almost 10 years only recently I found that it is still as funny to me as back in 98 when I saw it first, and I decided that it's a shame it can't be properly enjoyed by people who don't speak German. So I started to translate and subtitle the whole thing as good as I can, trying to stay as true to the original German dialogues as possible while, where needed, making small adjustments here and there where 1:1 translations wouldn't have worked.
I think it turned out quite well, even if I say so myself ^^.
Here's what Rolf Schuetteler, one of the creative heads behind the whole project, has to say about the movie:
"This 32 minute parody of the classic Star Trek series was shot on video as a low budget production and all the roles were cast with amateur actors. The production's "Starship Enterprise", built from wood and carton, attempts to resurrect the naive charm of the original series.
The plot of "Schattenspiele" (Shadowplay) follows some almost stereotypical elements of the classic TV show, making fun of those episodes that feature some kind of body/mind-swap.
The movie had it's premier in march '98 when it was shown in an exclusive screening in the "Sternkino" in Bonn and later had to be repeated several times on the "Fedcon VI" (Germany's biggest Star Trek & SciFi convention) due to it's success with the audience there.
It is the third and final instalment in a series of Star Trek parodies that this team made between 1996 and 1998 and it is definitely the one with the best script and the highest technical standards."
PS: Oh, and the tune running at the end credits is one of mine. ^^
immediate...ejaculation? Awesome.

@kahunapte In hindsight I was surprised how well most of the jokes translate into English, even if they're wordplays like that one... ^^
