The U2 influence is most obvious from "The Unforgettable Fire." After that album, U2 seemed to become more of an American band than an Irish band. There have been a few returns to that sound but those sounds won't/don't fill the stadiums.

I think more people hate what U2 are than the music they make, but you cant doubt the influence they've had especially on modern indie/ rock music
