    I was expecting "I'll give you 5 seconds"

    after "can you spot them",

    :))

  • That was quite a game! To be honest, I thought it may have been a more subdued and boring game. But piece sacs for attacking position is really exciting!

  • These guys were geniuses. Especially in their time. In the Modern World, so many more strategies and tactics have evolved. But in the first EVER championship; showing revolutionary moves.... Genius!

  • Alekhine is the French spelling. The e at the end is to stop the last syllable from being pronounce "an". The German spelling is Aljechin. (Second syllable stressed) That is how he pronounced his name, although most Russians pronounce it Al-yo-khin, again stressing the same syllable. Even in Russia they have Mainwaring-pronounced-Mannering syndrome.

    Euwe is pronounced er-va (silent R as in southern English.)

    Zukertort is pronounced Tsookertort.

  • Great commentary Kingcrusher ! I have spoken to Robbie Kean who claims to be a distance relative of Alekhine.

    He has a family bible that shows the name" Alec Keen" Of course not recognised in Russia - neverthe less, shows a new facet on the correct pronunciation of this great master!

  • loved it.

  • Sorry for being wrong.

    The right pronunciation is as follows:how it is pronounced in Alekhine's motherlanguage-Russian),using first letters of each subsequent word:

    Umbrella,Lexus,Earnings(there is accent on this sound),Hunt,Injustice,Night.

  • OK,I am not a master on english transcription.I give you the right sounding of Alekhine's surname(how it is pronounced in Alekhine's motherlanguage-Russian),using first letters of each subsequent word:

    Umbrella,Lexus,Earnings(there is accent on this sound),Hunt,Injustice,Hunger.

  • I think Nigel Short said it was pronounced something like "Al--ee-y-ekin"

  • Didn't Alekhine himself pronounce it Al-yokin?

  • It is pity people nowasdays don't know how to properly pronounce the surname of the great Russian champion Alexander Alekhine.I give the proper pronunciation: {A-L -E(stress) -X - EA-N}
