The Pre-Heaven Power Method (Shian Tian Jin Fa 先天勁法) of the YiZungYue (易宗岳) School of Internal Martial Arts, founded by Master Pan Yue (潘岳) in Taipei, Taiwan, roughly consists of the following four stages of training:
(1) Standing stake (站樁),
(2) Testing Jin (試勁),
(3) Response-hands (應手), and
(4) Sparring (散手)

A student of YiZungYue School usually starts the response-hands training after he/she has reached a certain level of proficiency in static fajin (發勁), i.e., issuing power against a motionless or non-resisting partner. The response-hands exericise, derived from Bagua push-hands, is also similar to the fixed-step free-style push-hands (定步自由推手) training of Tai Chi (太極). This exercise helps to consolidate and extend (from static to dynamic situations) the body mechanics acquired in the previous stages of training. The exercise also aims at cultivating the sensitivity of detecting the opponent's intention and issuing power at the appropriate moment. It is the intermediate training process between static fajin and dynamic sparring.

The ten essences of response-hands (應手十要) are touching (沾), hooking (扣), massaging (揉), lifting (挈), and twining (纏) for external hands (外手) and adhering (黏), twisting (搓), propping (撐), rolling (滾), and rebounding (彈) for internal hands (內手).

The video shows Sifu Wei-Chung Lin (林維中) of the Chinese Taoist Martial Arts Association ( http://ctmaa.com/ ) in Skokie (a northern suburb of Chicago) Illinois practicing the response-hands exercise with students. The Testing Jin exercise is also briefly shown before each session. For details of Testing Jin exercises, please see the following videos:

  • static fajin is such a contradictory name lol. fajin can't be static as it is very dynamic

  • To imbrd: Here, "static fajin" exercise means the opponent remains static and rigid. He/she serves only as a "static weight" or "punching bag".

  • I enjoy internal martial arts videos that apply these principles to people of different sizes.

There are too many videos I see where a big fat walrus-like "internal master" is pushing around a skinny student who's shorter than them, and whether or not it's internal begins to be hard to tell.

When a man who is both shorter and outweighed is effortlessly controlling the action like in this video, then some argument as to internal skill can be made. Keep this up!

  • It's refreshing to see a true martial arts demonstration unlike the phony "McDojo" junk that seems to be so popular nowadays. A grand video that shows great insight into internal martial arts.

  • @taipingvlg i have and i understand why but it dose help feel the intent of the opponent if they strike

  • @wowitGabe Please do some research on Tai Chi push-hands exercise. In this kind of exercise, no punch is allowed.

  • @taipingvlg i totally agree with you but after a while don't you think that your students should be able to punch with in the push hands but other then that she she

  • @gqprophet2010 how about he turns with your jab hyper extending your joints and uplifts your hooking punches elbow as he goes into a sinking elbow-head butt transition while hooking your lead leg with with his foot dislocating your knee as he walks right through you.as you lay there with a broken jab elbow, sprained shoulder, and bad knee you can ponder that losers always fall on the ground.but hey you have one good leg to crawl away with.

  • @gqprophet2010 I agree with you that no one should learn useless "martial arts." But, in this particular video, there are no "beautiful choreographed moves". Every move is spontaneous and based on the reaction of the opponent. This is just a sensitivity training exercise. By the way, for thousands of years, Chinese martial artists practice forms. The forms should not be the only things one trains but they are an important part of the training.

  • @taipingvlg ?I observed an ancient martial art with no baring's in todays world being practiced ... Martial arts are for self defense no ? Or for some , is it to appear as if you could defend yourself from an attacker with beautiful choreographed moves the wow and awe any bystanders ?

I just dont get training in a martial art could not save my life or the safety of my family ..

  • Wonderful. Much respect to the teacher.

  • Good point WarriorBoy. I'm also tired of internal systems having to justify their existence to proponents of external fighting systems. Shouldn't we just appreciate the good things that people have done?
