I'm just discovering Furtwangler. What a tragic figure in music history. He did what he could for European Jewish conductors during the satanic reich. But if my history is correct, when it was suggested he become music director of the NY Philharmonic, there was outrage because we didn't want a "Nazi" leading our orchestra. Rock and a hard place. Imagine for a moment what could have been if we could have let go of politics.

I'm fascinated by Furtwängler's Beethoven symphonies. Each time you listen to even the same interpretation you discover previously unheard moments, motives, color in this master piece.
Maybe this is it what makes this performance timeless! :D

Again and again it's Beethoven's original tempo. And come on if this isn't "con brio" I don't know what can be more on fire! It's Allegro not Allegretto like in unbearable modern interpretations @ aboistru!

Wow. I love the horn at 1:46. Furtwangler's pacing is very good. You can really relax and appreciate each segment.

I love this song unconditionally
but the oboe at :40 is simply god awful. it sounds like a Kings introduction from back in the dark ages
