A fairly simple, uneventful video clip that is most notable as a quaint snapshot of the past in which we are given a glimpse of a younger Golden Gate Bridge and a simpler SF skyline.

Although the bridge looks nearly unchanged in the 60+ years since this film was shot, for someone who crosses it regularly, I was struck by how little traffic (and fewer lanes) are evident from this clip.

A lot of my work involves restoring, digitizing and transferring antique 8mm film. This particular clip was originally shot in 1946 by a vacationing couple visiting the San Francisco Bay Area. I opted to share this clip due to its unique perspective on a very recognizable landmark.

  • what method did you use to transfer this film to digital? what equipment?

  • @Steph6n I use a WorkPrinter from MovieStuff, and capture into Final Cut Pro where I then apply re-timing and color restoration.

  • @lunarparcel thanks!! Man those are cool units. Expensive venture. I'd love to own one though, my dad has a box full of 8mm that we recently dug up and played on an old projector I got for free. I'm glad I asked though, it's a good website with lots of info on the types of machines out there. Do you use yours for business, transferring other people's footage or just for personal?

  • @Steph6n I initially set it up for business purposes, but life got in the way over the last couple of years and I haven't been able to use it as much as I had hoped. I am hoping to get it going again in the next year and putting it to good use.

  • Look - No Traffic!!!!

  • @clarkewi Yeah, kind of surreal to see it that way.

  • @FriendLondonFriend Well, yeah....actually the music itself does indeed evoke thoughts about an era that is somewhat later then the timeframe depicted in the video. I just selected it mostly due to its feel for a light afternoon drive.

  • Lets hope the happy couple bought some Bay Area real estate while they were on vacation, back then.

    .

Isn't this music a bit young for this video era?

    Just wondering.

    Thanks for posting.

    .

    Cheers.

  • @jjgriffinjr, I believe thats an area no longer there just north of Santa Rosa Ca. called Larkfield on the old Redwood Hwy. Not absolutely sure though.
