(Dec. 3. 2010) Sponsored by The Lantos Foundation, the film VLAST (POWER) tells the story of Mikhail Borisovich Khodorkovsky, formerly the wealthiest man in Russia, who was arrested at gunpoint on a snowy Siberian runway on Oct. 25, 2003. After he challenged Vladimir Putin by promoting political and civil society reforms, his oil company was seized, followed by a trial that caused international outrage. He remains imprisoned and is currently facing his second trial on absurd new charges. This film shows how liberty and the rule of law have become casualties of the new Russia in a compelling scenario of political intrigue in an oil dependent economy. The film portrays the promising universe Khodorkovsky created and the destruction, devastation, and disillusionment his prosecution and conviction have brought to those around him.
Introduction to the film by Former Chief Justice John T. Broderick, Jr.
Q&A with panelists (L to R): Moderator Katrina Swett of the Lantos Foundation, Pavel Khodorkovsky (Mikhail's son), the film's director Cathryn Collins, and the Honorable Kathleen McGuire.
