South Korean Police Chief Pledges High Security for G20 Summit

South Korean police are preparing for any terror threats during the G20 summit in Seoul next month. A G20 police security unit was established two weeks ago for security preparations.

G20 leaders will meet in Seoul in early November to discuss global financial issues.

And South Korean police are preparing for any terror threats during the summit.

[Cho Hyun-oh, Seoul Police Chief]:
"We expect violent protests, which have become customary practices at every large-scale international event, during this summit. Recently, threats of international terrors have been raised, and North Korea's threats still remain."

He says special laws will be enacted to guarantee a safe summit.

[Cho Hyun-oh, Seoul Police Chief]:
"The South Korean government has established 'special law' to limit protests in the security safety zone and to restrict entry of foreigners with records of violent protest."

A G20 police security unit was established two weeks ago. About 17,000 policemen demonstrated various drills at the launch ceremony, coping with possible terrorists or violent protests near the summit venue and hotels.

As chair nation of the group of major economies in the world, South Korea will not only set the agenda for the meeting, but will also lead the members in finding solutions to the global financial crisis.
