This is the complete soundtrack to the Japanese version of Castlevania III. It made use of the VRC6 chip, a special mapper developed by Konami that allowed for 3 extra channels of sound. With two extra pulse waves (that had 8 available duty cycles as opposed to the standard 4), and a sawtooth wave on top, Akumajou Densetsu sounds distinct amongst most other Famicom + NES titles. Madara and Esper Dream 2 are the only other Famicom games that also used the VRC6 for sound expansion.

Fun fact- Hidenori Maezawa, one of the composers and sound programmers for Contra (NES), helped develop the VRC6 chip. You can read more about the VRC6 and other mappers here-

  • After the credits. NOW PLAY HARD MODE! ....Damn it

  • @Jazzypants2007 And the fact that that the music and game balancing are waaaaay better in Akumajou.

  • @RagingBanebou Why the "basically"? It IS Castlevania 3. There are only a few differences (The biggest being Grant's main weapon being a projectile rather than a short-range dagger) from the English version.

  • @DemiSonic You mean during the end credits of Akumajo Densetsu, which is basically the Japanese version of "Castlevania III" for the NES?

  • I think i've heard this used somewhere, but I can't figure out where....
