Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture for the year 2008 - but is it also the capital of contrast between rich and poor?

  • My mother was the last out of a street with 70 or so houses-off Wavertree rd.Her house was compulsory purchased-a crime.I mourn the loss of the community we created & I am as appalled as you at the 60's housing policy.HOWEVER the future is here & as always scousers will adapt.I believe we have learned the lessons of the past.Building has begun&YOU SHOULD FILM THE RISE AS WELL AS THE FALL.

  • @atticusallstars Why couldn't the solid housing stock off Wavertree Rd have been re-modified? Why is it so that they were deemed for demolition when reconstruction was possible? The houses were of good solid brick and foundation. Homes such as these have been renovated modernised and converted into homes to die for in parts of Manchester. Some say, that this approach would have been cheaper than what is now happening total demolition and rebuilding of houses that may be of far less character.

  • Every single one of the derelict streets & shops in this vid have been demolished or are, as I write this, being demolished. They're making way for smart town houses & new homes & shops. Liverpool has bucked the trend of this recession & is rising like a phoenix. Liverpool is on the up & up & for some reason some people can't stand it. Liverpool has it's problems (like anywhere) but at least we're doing something about it. Remake this movie in 5 years.

  • @atticusallstars The video was made in Capital of Culture year, and is a statement of the contrast between the amount of capital and work that was flooding into the city centre at that time, and the destitution of homes just a few miles down the road. No work was carried out on these homes for over 6 years (in some parts), and families still lived amongst the dereliction

  • @soundation Another premise; - Liverpool had much of its heart ripped out by planners in the 1960s, when vast whole communities where moved out and on their former homes demolished. Is Liverpool making the same mistake again removing (forever?) its working class neighbourhoods?

  • I don't know why they were not saved/modified.I do know many options were considered.Point is that there are already so many negative images of Liverpool (the one you've posted here is fair & well made but of it's time & out of date.)Things are changing quickly & for the better in L/pool despite the credit crunch. This world class city is finally getting its act together.Capital of culture was just a kick start.
