The ONE MAN PRODUCTION:
Instruments/Equipment that I used and Making of:
This is my first Video-Clip.
A friend lent me that panasonic hd camcorder. (Thank you Dennis!!)
So every time I pressed the protools record button, I pressed the record button on the video camera, too.
Every recorded track was played straight through, without any later overdubbing or "repairing".
In my studio, I`m using a Digidesign 002 Interface with protools Version 8 on a Power Mac G5 and Mackie Studio Monitors HR 824. For pre-amping and pre-equing the instruments and microphones I use a crest XR 20 Mixer, two Avalons 737SP and a SPL Goldmike.
I started this recording session with playing the drums without earphones, as you can see. That ment, without any Playback, without a Click, only the "Idea" of the arrangement and the right tempo in my head. My drums (Pearl Kick and Toms, Paiste 2000/Line Cymbals, don`t know which Snare) are recorded on 8 Mono-Tracks and is miced with "Live-Mic-Setup": 1x Shure Beta52 for the Kick, 4x Shure SM57 for Toms and Snare (top an bottom), 1x Sennheiser e 614 for Hi-Hat, 2x Audio Technica AT 3528 Overheads.
Next recorded Track was the A-Git (late 80s Takamine) to have the first basic chords. Mono miced with an Audio Technica AT 4050/CM5 Vocal Mic with the drumtracks as guide on the earphones.
Third Track: Bass, Ken Smith BT 6 String played through a Warwick Wamp 400 Amp into Ampeg 2x 10" an 1x15" Boxes. Recorded Mono through D.I. build in Amp. No need for earphones because Drums and A-Git, I played before, I could hear on my studio monitors.
Next recorded Track: Stereo Piano, using my Roland RD 700GX. I simply used Pianosound Nr.1 + a little Reverb. Ready!
Enough playback for recording the Vocal Track. Using an Audio Technica AT 4050/CM5 Microphone through an Avalon 737SP preamp. I recorded the vocals "this early" because I needed to know where to play the later Blues Licks on Guitar and Organ between the vocal lines.
Next Track: Hammond XK-33c Organ, recorded stereo from D.I., using the internal Leslie.
Then Rhythm Guitar, playing my late 80s Washburn HB 335 through a boss RE 20 Space Echo and a Rocktron Cyber Reverb, into a clean Engl Souvereign 100 Watt Combo Amp with a 12" Speaker. I crunched that Rhythmsound with a little bit of gain from a T-Rex Dr. Swamp overdrive.
Last Track: Solo Guitar, using my favorite Fender Jeff Back Custom Shop Strat through T-Rex Dr. Swamp for overdrive into the Engl Souvereign and a little Delay. The Git Amp was miced with a Sennheiser e609.
The mixdown was not a big thing. Nearly no using of EQs or other plug-ins. Just a little bit compression on Vocals, Kick and Snare. I used only one Reverb plug in for drums or vocals. The rest was only Volume mixing.
To get a nice, warm and strong stereo signal I let the Stereo-Mastertrack run through a SPL Dynamaxx Stereo Compressor and a SPL Vitalizer MK2.
