Aaah memories.... somewhere in my photo collection is a pic I took on the bridge from the cab of the Silver Fern (circa 1980) before the deviation was completed.

Is this to the north of the old bridge concrete bases, one sees driving north as the passing lanes commence?

Is that tunnel on privet property? I wanna see it

Hi Catlover28, It is on farm property, and not on a public walkway, as I found out after my visit. The public walkway ends at the road boundary. It would probably be possible to arrange access with the landowner. A highly reccomended explore, .... I hope to traverse the line through the tunnel, and over the viaduct route, in the near future. Regards, Tony

Hello Crintingnut. This tunnel is immediately south of the old (demolished) Mangaweka viaduct. Trains would have exited the tunnel and almost gone straight onto the high steel structure. A great pity the north end of the tunnel portal has been carried away by a slip, but at least the bore is still passable. Cheers,
Choochoonut.
