"And in that moment, everything I knew to be true about myself up until then was gone. I was acting like another man, yet I was more myself than ever before."

-'The Hedges of Middlesex County, pt 3:'

When the editors at discountBush.com told me I was to travel to Boston to investigate the Gates/Crowley affair, I thought they were joking. After all, I was only an intern.

"Can someone from the Vermont bureau make the trip? I'm kinda tied up working on the website at the moment."

"No! The Montpelier office is still busy working the Truth Commission beat. Besides, we want you on this assignment."

"But why me? I've never been to New England. I've never even left the midwest!"

"Don't worry about it, Slayton. You're perfect for this project. You'll bring a heartland perspective to the story."

So, I packed up my netbook and my camera, and set out for a four-day visit from Missouri to Massachusetts that changed the details of my life forever.
