Thomascow`s version "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 song written by Ewan MacColl. my all-time favourite writer, England`s MI5 caused MacColl a lot of trouble causing his songs to be banned from the BBC he enlisted in the Army in July 1940, but deserted in December. There is a plaque dedicated to MacColl in Russell Square in London. The inscription includes: "Presented by his communist friends 25.1.1990 ... Folk Laureate - Singer - Dramatist - Marxist ... in recognition of strength and singleness of purpose of this fighter for Peace and Socialism". In 1991 he was awarded a posthumous honorary degree by the University of Salford. "Dirty Old Town" is another great song written by Ewan MacColl in 1949, The song was written in reference to Salford, Lancashire, England, the town where MacColl was brought up. It was originally composed to cover an awkward scene change in MacColl's Salford-set, 1949 play Landscape with Chimneys, but with the growing popularity of folk music the song became a standard. In Ireland, the song is often assumed to be about Dublin.Truly a man of great vision perception and a talent very rare. His daughter from his second marriage, Kirsty MacColl, followed him into music Krsty MacColl was killed in an accident in Mexico in 2000.As I say he is a great favourite and likewise with Kristy, she was of a similar attitude and they both are a rare breed. The types of rebel worth lending an ear to them send many valuable messages. I sing many of Evans songs and while doing so I try to absorb the feeling behind the words and music, such a talent "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" has been recorded by Roberta Flack, biggest hit & many others Marianne Faithfull, the Kingston Trio, the Chad Mitchell Trio-Mike Kobluk solo, Gordon Lightfoot, and Maria Taylor. Johnny Cash, the Chi-Lites, Marcia Griffiths, Isaac Hayes, Bert Jansch, Bradley Joseph, Joanna Law, Alison Moyet, George Michael, Elvis Presley, the Stereophonics, Mel Tormé, Mary Travers, Vanessa L. Williams , Christy Moore.& Céline Dion .& now Thomascow. Enjoy
And indeed, this is the first time ever I saw your face. Beautiful and powerful interpretation, with meaningful video effects as always. I love Roberta's version, but yours sings to me on a different level entirely. Thanks for another good one (and it's a handsome face for sure)!
