We have no idea how this thing ended up in our backyard but it's a darn interesting mystery! Yes, there is a herd of buffalo about 10 miles (16 kilometres) away, right off Interstate 70, but it's a very protected group that would have to jump a ten foot (3 metre) fence, cross a busy freeway, and then maneuver 1,800 acres (728 hectares) of open space to reach my backyard.

I telephoned the Division of Wildlife and they didn't have any ideas (or reports of missing buffalo). We do have a lot of other wildlife in our backyard ranging from garter and rattlesnakes to raccoon, skunk, fox, coyote and deer. So I guess anything is possible! Oh, using my bicycle/backpack scale I weighed this skull in at 5.9 kilograms (13.1 pounds)

Here's my personal web page about backyard wildlife:

  • i found an entire buffalo head with no blood at all in it or around it in the middle of a forest, and there isnt even baffalo anywere in that area. lol, there was buffalo fur in the trees, i mean it was high in the trees, me and my friends found it while playing paintball. Anyways i was thinking of going and getting it next halloween for my costume, i wanted to wear it on my head with a huge trench coat. Of course i would wash the shit out of it and wear a cloth mask.

  • @RetardedxVideo

Interesting encounter during paintball - thanks for the story! On a related note, I once read a book called "Skulls and Bones" - A guide to the skeletal structures and behavior of North American mammals by Glenn Searfoss. He strongly recommends what you described about washing out the skull. Searfoss says that bones, even when appearing dried-out and clean, still carry a lot of pathogens...

  • oh my god i want that SO BAD!......i'm sure that coyotes drug it over to your property to nibble their kill......

  • @jippedo

Turns out you're right about the coyotes. Unfortunately, though, it turns out the skulls were from a neighbor's yard, further down the street, where they had left them out in their own yard to "cure" for future display...

  • Looks like New Mexico? Amazing state.

  • @BethanyRose94

Nope - it's Colorado - an even more amazing state!
