When & Where: Stumptown Comic Fest, April 28, 2012 (Portland, Oregon, USA).
Who:
Interviewee: cartoonist Neal Skorpen www.nealskorpen.com
Interviewer: writer Peter Gelman www.dangerquestmysteries.com
Collaborative graphic novel: www.islandofthemoths.com
Neal Skorpen, a well known instructor of comic lore, comic applier, and who has a black belt in aikido, faced even more of Peter Gelman's gotcha journalism about Neal's college comics controversy. In the previous interview Neal revealed that years ago, his comic strip in the Daily Emerald at the University of Oregon lead to serious TROUBLE. Gelman digs right in and forces Skorpen to reveal the details of the TROUBLE. This includes the fact that the editor delivered the message that he was fired by printing the message in a comic strip. Hoist by his own petard!! Poor Neal. Meanwhile, Peter Gelman, who collaborated with Neal on the graphic novel "Island of the Moths", keeps asking questions and doesn't let Neal shy away from revealing the sordid underbelly of comics creation. Gelman as always is able to sum up Neal's experiences in a clear and pithy manner, that somehow makes sense, even to Neal himself. Suddenly Skorpen has a LOT to say about comics in newspapers today! Woe, where did all those opinions come from? Neal discusses the role of the Shrill and Didactic in art, and a project that involved pirates and Kepler. What!? Suddenly a Stumptown fan of Kepler speaks up! Real life intervenes! Kepler, Kepler, Kepler. A discussion of Kepler's cosmology follows, and Neal's latest work-in-progress. This was the 5th of many, many interviews, all made from Skorpen & Gelman's booth at the Stumptown Comics Fest. Thank you.
