These are the only televised Nationals, apart from 1978, which have never been uploaded in full. They were presumably shown in full on Racing UK, but it'd be a brave man who uploaded those showings now (sadly).

the most famous horse race of them all

Never seen that amazing finish of the 1971 National before, so here's a question: have *more* horses than this been in contention to win coming to the Elbow before or since? In all the Nationals I've watched from 1983 on, I don't remember that many horses being in contention.

Any of 5 could have won. Personally I think Astbury was somewhat unlucky, He was close to being brought down at the second last and badly slowed, yet he finished like a train on the outside to finish a close up 3rd.

@ianpafc yes i remember the sunday paper the day after, the back page headline was " the day Beau Bob died" with a picture of his jockey cradling the horses head in his arms waiting for the vet, very very sad

think i have these all on video but the recorder's long since knackered! good post!

john cook rode a superb waiting race on specify and won fair and square

10 yards further Black Secret would have had the 71 national.General Symons almost out on his feet in 72 with Black Secret in frame again in 4th
-
he was more unlucky in 75,he fell and broke his neck and poor horse was destroyed

times change but the national is still the ultimate challenge i hope they dont make any more changes though they must leave it as it is to keep it unique there will still be accidents even possible fatalities but that is the nature of the sport rasehorses still have a great life though

Beechers these days is not half the jump it was back then. Plenty of the other jumps have been modified as well. The third (an open ditch i believe) has also been made smaller. A shame really because it hasn't made any difference to the amount of horse casualties which is why it was done. If anything making the jumps easier makes the jockeys go that little bit faster and in doing so any falls that happen are at a greater speed and possibly more dangerous to the horse. Just a thought!

I'd say Beau Bob was, in 71. Jumped Bechers in the lead and his rider, unluckily unseats.
Thanks for this. These were the latest Nationals that I'd never seen any of. Is it from a racing video?
