The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979

Lyrics:
Shakedown 1979
Cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet
Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all

I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed to the earth below

Double cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
Morphine city slippin' dues down to see

We don't even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go
Beneath the sound of hope

Justine never knew the rules,
Hung down with the freaks and ghouls
No apologies ever need be made
I know you better than you fake it to see

We don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
The street heats the urgency of now
As you see there's no one around

For people who were young when this song came out, it brings back all kinds of amazing emotions and memories of that time. For a few minutes it actually brings us back to the time we have our whole lives in front of us...not a care in the world.

For the younger generation it brings back fond memories of stealing cars and beating hookers to death in a video game....no I can't see why that would upset you at all ;)

Omg I was I was only 8 year old when I would hear this song. Loved it then and now as a 26 years old and I love it more! I'm so happy I grew up In the 90s and I lived some real music!

So true. I'll admit that I associate this song most with "beating hookers and stealing cars," but hearing 1979 prior to GTA in my early years is why I was so drawn to this graceful tune. I was surprised to hear in GTA IV such a nostalgic melody. I'm no douche, but "I am a 90's kid," and with that said, the fondest memories of this song come from my buddies and I playing GTA IV; me ecstatic to hear 1979 play on LRR. People will all hear this song from a different vessel. Just let them enjoy it.

i dont get it either dude. for some reason, young people find some sort of entitlement in enjoying good music that isn't from their generation. like they're better people or something... its really weird.
