India Beats Australia by 9 Runs to Win One-Day Cricket Series

By Rajiv pundir

-- India beat Australia by nine runs date 4-mar-2008 to claim the best-of-three Commonwealth Bank tri-nations cricket final after only two matches.

Sachin Tendulkar, playing what may be his final innings in Australia, scored 91 as India made 258-9 from its 50 overs at the Gabba in Brisbane, then Praveen Kumar took 4 wickets to help dismiss the hosts for 249.

It's the second straight year world champion Australia has lost in the final of a home tri-nations one-day tournament after England won in 2007. India took the opening match two days ago by six wickets, with Tendulkar hitting a record-extending 42nd one-day international century.

Today, the 34-year-old faced 121 balls and shared a 94-run opening stand with Robin Uthappa, who scored 30. Yuvraj Singh made 38 and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni added 36 to provide further support, before Tendulkar's dismissal sparked a collapse.

Tendulkar's wicket was one of three for Michael Clarke, while Nathan Bracken took three of the last four wickets to fall.

Kumar, playing in his fifth one-day international, struck with the third ball of Australia's reply when Adam Gilchrist edged to wicketkeeper Dhoni. It signaled the end of Gilchrist's international career, with spinner Brad Hogg also set to retire after this match.

Ricky Ponting was dismissed in Kumar's next over and he then bowled Clarke to leave Australia struggling on 32-3. Matthew Hayden, with 55 runs, and Andrew Symonds, 42, led a recovery with an 89-run partnership before both lost their wickets in an over from Harbhajan Singh.

Test Ban

Harbhajan had a three-Test ban for racial abuse against Symonds overturned on appeal in January when the charge was downgraded to abusive language. Hayden last week was reprimanded by Cricket Australia for insulting Harbhajan on a radio show.

India's two-month tour has been punctuated by disputes with the Australians over umpiring, sportsmanship and behavior.

Mike Hussey, 44 runs, and James Hopes, who top-scored with 63, gave Australia a chance of the win, though both were dismissed as it chased 76 from the final 10 overs. Hopes was the last man out when he was caught by Piyush Chawla at mid-on.

  • AUSSIES ARE ASSHOLE , THEIR MOTHERS ARE PROSTITUTE.............

  • @irishgodfatherchris - Does not matter as long as they are playing for England. I believe that they are smart enough to get the talented people from wherever possible and retained them. Many people for many other profession, just like cricket are being hired from across the globe and that happens in the era of globalization - compete globally. India is still far far behind in this area.

  • @getalifein I have a lot of trouble with calling the English team English, Strauss is from South Africa as Pietersen and a few others including their coach and lets not forget Eoin Morgan, how bad do thier county players have to be for an Irishman to be better

  • @irishgodfatherchris - If you read my comments' history with so-called "Australian" "stiggy" aka "gulabjamoon", I am sure you will find out that I am not boasting my country's cricket team at all as I have known for a long time that the team his HIGHLY inconsistent :)

I know that he is NOT an Australian. Besides, I have never mentioned who will win the NEXT WC. Its highly unpredictable game. Australians are building their team, England is almost humiliating India now. So chill out.... :)

  • @getalifein yeah well done but you wont win next time and thats because a lot of your players that you relied on will retire, as will ours, I reckon if South Africa and New Zealand pull their fingers out they'll be the teams to watch.

  • @sunooona an Indian talking about cheating, thats the pot calling the kettle black.

  • the most shameful moment ever is registered on the name of team australia only by bowling underarm delivry who can forget the sydney test aussi team is bunch of bastards and cheaters
