Without a doubt, one of the best known early AQHA cutting horses of all time. She was Reserve NCHA Champion 5 times, in the top ten 9 times, escaped death once when she coliced under Don Dodge's ownership and had to be rushed into surgery, escaped death a second time when she was left abandonded in a trailer, and escaped death yet a third time when her last owners, upon seeing her for the first time, wanted to put her down. The Jensen's attending vets convinced them to give her a chance. After three years, the effects of the hormones she was under while showing finally subsided, and she was in foal for the first time. Sadly, she only produced two foals, but both went on to found a dynasty that still exists today.

  • I sure like this video, how can I get a copy?

  • I'll answer this privately. Thanks!

  • Can anyone tell me anything about why they were abandoned in the trailer? Wouldn't you like to 'have a word' with whoever was hauling this horse! Not knowing all the facts, my comment would be ... The stupid son-of-bitch could of tied them outside the trailer. I'd hate to be this person when quizzed before the Pearly Gates.

  • Speculation was that the driver heard about B A Skipper's plane crash, maybe over the radio, and feared not getting paid, so just walked away.

  • what an amazing horse! makes me proud to own horses with those bloodlines...made me tear up..i love the story of poco lena...really an amazing video and song!

  • Many thanks!

  • Everybody knew that the Doc o Lena and Dry doc bloodlines owed their talent to the "bottom" or mares side of the pedigree. Stallions make all the money, but the dam is hugely important. It's wonderful to see a mare honored in this way. What a story!

  • Every now and then I watch this video and

it still sends me a shower down my spine.

    This is truly beautiful!

  • I grew up hearing about this legendary horse...it's awsome to the hear the story put into lyrics. My old gelding out of Shorty Lena is loved and has the heart of this great bloodline...at 17 he is still cashing checks earned at weekend jackpots. Thank you Poco Lena and thank you Doc for saving her and giving us Doc O Lena.
