The romans might have used Latin among the army and eachother but the common Language of the entire area, spoken by all was KOINE GREEK. You are correct about Alexanxder concuring the area many years before. When rome became the super power they did not try to supress the language of the people. LATIN WAS NOT THE COMMON LANGUAGE @ THE TIME OF CHRIST!. When Alexander the great expanded the Greek empire as far as Afghanistan, India, the people had to assimilate in order to be a part of the empire. Alexander /Greece spoke ATTIC GREEK but this was to difficult for the masses. A easier KOINE GREEK WAS SPOKEN BY ALL INCLUDING ROMAN, JEWS, GENTILE etc.
