The Madison Scouts Horn Line played this beautiful, emotion-filled rendition of their corps song, "(You'll) Never Walk Alone" at their warm-up, prior to the DCI Semifinals competition in Indianapolis, August 7, 2009, knowing it would probably be for the last time this season. Drum Corps fans were cheated of the opportunity to see this great corps compete in the Finals Competition the following day.... but these notes will always resonate in our hearts. Thank you, Madison, for all you do!!

  • I really wish the audio were better, the depth the scouts have in their live performances is stunning. Whoever shot this should back up like 15 feet from that kicking horn line!

  • @CRAZYOAK1216:

That would be me... Jeff Levine... and that's my son, Aaron, Trumpet section leader, on the left end of the line. 15 feet further wouldn't have done any good... That's about the quality you get recording video with a Nikon SLR still camera. The rat-a-tat of drum lines in the background doesn't help either. Still, I'm glad I was able to capture it.

  • @MendTheWorld

(in case you were wondering why the camera lingered on the left end of the line a bit longer than it should have! )

  • @MendTheWorld Thanks for your comments...I do have to ask (I wasn't able to attend the championships in 2009...why didn't the fans get to see them? That's terrible!

  • @jomolido The Scouts did perform at Quarter & Semifinals, but didn't make the cut for Finals. Fans love the Scouts' shows, but with the DCI ranking system, relatively few were on hand to see them perform early in the day. After 4 years of seeing the various corps, and the audience response to their shows, my admiration for the Scouts AND my ill-feelings toward DCI and their judging system have both grown progressively stronger. Much more could be said, but space (and tact) do not allow.

  • That's Dr. Nick Williams, remarkably talented band director at University of North Texas, who was Brass Caption Supervisor last year... currently a consultant to the Corps.

  • @bobshowers A Cavaliers fan?

  • My band director died a couple weeks ago, his name was Bruce Dinkins. We would play this song every game, it is what pumped us up and made us want it even more... this was his song, and brings a tear to my eye listening to it, it is truly beautiful, and inspiring. thank you.... now i can be reminded of him...

  • its to bad we didnt get to see them here in Orlando.. They canceled due to problems with their buses or something.

  • Sorry ....... I'm just trying to figure out what they're wearing.

    It's so - unScout-like. It's throwing me.

  • damn best hornline ever i play contra aka tuba its pretty gud tone

  • Still living with a vivid memory of the '83 Scouts, playing this for Retreat at the Bloomington IN contest -- the only corps to use a flowing ballad as they exited.

In spite of being on the move in regular step, they managed to deliver a fully-realized, richly expressive and powerful version that came across almost like a movement from a symphony. It was absolutely transporting and magical.

By comparison, even this video's very nice play-through sounds oddly metronomic and careful.
