@littlenaismith It played upon the historical cultural & political animosities between Indonesia & Australia; which a large demographic in Australia are particularly sensitive to not only given the cultural/religious divide but also considering the numerous protracted drug-related arrests & executions of Australian citizens in Indonesia (Schapelle Corby), the people smuggling operations from Indonesia to Australia & the position of Bali as a premier Australian tourism destination

@littlenaismith Because there were numerous documented Islamic patsies with exaggerated links to extremist organisations, that could conveniently be framed for the Bali bombings in Indonesia, a Muslim nation.

Setting up a credible and believable tale of "home-grown terror" or Al-Qaeda operatives infiltrating Australia and attacking a major city or landmark would be far too difficult and time-consuming.

The last noteable terrorist attack on Australian soil was in 1986.
