They're certainly a tad uglier than the smaller otters of the world I have to say... and I'm not sure I'd want to be swimming near a wild one (seeing that they're 6 feet long and weigh as much as an Alsatian!)... but I still like them! ;-)

Those things are a little scary looking. :o

I believe so, Devourer. I seem to recall being told that the adults can scoff upwards of 4 to 5 kilograms of fish A DAY... that's over 10% of their bodyweight!

What is it eating? A fish?

Thanks for the guess Chris! However, I filmed this in the Manu reserve and, if memory serves me, it was Cocha Salvador. Isn't Sandoval in the Tambopata reserve? Did you get good views of otters there too?

Something like that could be the genesis of the Loch Ness Monster legend.

@stewartgrangerfan76 - Yes, I guess so! I've heard it been said before that the snake-like body 'loops' that arch out of the water on many a Nessie photograph could well be the rapid diving and resurfacing of a pack of (regular European) otters instead. I guess it could also be that there were even larger otters around in pre-historic times and thus one would suffice!
I prefer the Plesiosaur theory myself... or even the troup of swimming circus elephants suggestion!
Cheers for your comment!
