After two days trying to make a fire in the rain with a bow and drill I decided to try something different. I gathered up a few pieces of quartz and a little charcoal from a burnt piece of river driftwood and spent day three trying to get a spark with my Becker 9.

  • Sweet ! I expect from the look of the area you are in the BC area?

  • You got it! I live in northern B.C. on the coast but I grew up in the central interior. Adapting to the rainforest has been a good challenge!

  • Ha! Ya, the flame took me by suprise after so many failed tries.

  • Thanks! I use a Sony handycam, I'm not sure exactly what model but it does full HD and records it to a 60 gig hard drive. I'm happy with it but I've ruined a few shots because the mic is very sensative and it pics up small things like nose whistling or loud breathing. Ha!

  • Thanks guys! I hope nobody watches this video and then thinks they might rely on this technique in a survival situation because it was hard to do and it took a long time.

It was definately a good reminder to me of why I always carry some good fire starting kit.

  • nice one!

didn't know quartz would produce a spark... good to know!

  • Three days to get fire. I am sure you learned a lot in those days. That is awesome. You have a lot more patience then I do.

  • Wow, what can you say! good job.

  • Three days ? ... Don't fret, J, ... 'Was a time when we had to wait for lightning to strike.

  • Persistance pays off, and you laughed at taking three days to get that fire, but just imagine if you had spent three days surviving without a fire and then you get that result.....You would be doing cartwheels lol.......I'm impressed for sure 5*

  • Nevermind, should have read comments first. Ha!

  • Nice vid. What kind of camera do you use?

  • Cool ! I've camped across Canada a couple of times ...BC is on my top list to re visit .Keep up the great vids !
