This is the third installment of our trip to Ireland in April 2007.

Clonmacnoise is located on the Shannon River in County Offaly. This monastic city was founded by Saint Ciarán in AD 548. The last high kings of Tara are said to be buried near the altar of the cathedral. There are several towers located close to the Shannon. There are also the ruins of Clonmacnoise Castle just outside the visitor center.

We spent the night in Galway, but to test our endurance we drove out to Cliffden on the "backroads". We did manage to make it to Cliffden in time to catch the sunset, but the Sky Road we took to see it was a scary drive.

We ate a late dinner in Cliffden and then drove back in pitch black to Galway.

The music:

Connie Dover - Ubi Caritas
Bill Brennan - The Galway Shawl

  • This is beautiful and the choice of music superb. Our ancestral home is very near Clonmacnoise in Offaly. We are planning to visit for the first time in 2008. Thanks for the beautiful preview.

  • Thank you very much. The countryside is beautiful there and Clonmacnoise stands out even in a country full of incredible historical sites. We were there for hours wandering around and imagining what it would have been like over the centuries.

  • This is a wonderful piece... thanks so much for sharing this music.

Does anyone know the instrument that is playing solo after some 5:00? It sounds like a harp or other kind of string instrument, and I really want to know which one it is.

  • Beautifully done! In several trips to Clonmacnoise I have tread these paths and marvelled at the choice of real estate of the founder so many hundreds of years ago. What a place. Your video does the place justice. Found this by accident - a great accidental find. Thank you for the video. It provides an easy way back to this wondrous place near Shannonbridge.

  • you have done an excellent job on this video. Thank you. You resist temptation to move camera a lot, and you make nice compositions. Very professional. GREAT MUSIC choices. Well done. Makes me want to visit there. I have never been - this really makes me want to work to get there. Thanks again.

  • Ci sono andato in viaggio di nozze ad Agosto 2008.

Vivere in Irlanda, seppur per soli otto giorni, mi ha fatto maledire di esser costretto a vivere in un paese in grave declino come l'Italia.

    Failte a tutti.

  • stuoendo, ci sono stato un mesetto fa...

  • ci sono stato ed è stato stupendo! pur non essendo credente ritrovandomi li ho percepito l'importanza nei secoli del luogo!

  • Thanks for the translation (I'm happy I can understand Spanish), and the video. The song is bautiful. I placed it in my Favorites.

As for Connie, we all know she is a wonderful singer. That sums it all up, I think.

  • fuggin' awesome...

  • Thank you for uploading this video for the world to enjoy. I found it as a friend from Germany asked me about Connie Dover and you have combined her beautiful song with some very fine footage of the ruins of Clonmacnoise that I visited on just such a sunny day a decade ago. Your video brought back happy memories and when the sun shines on Ireland it is a truly wonderful place to relax, enjoy the tranquillity, friendly folk, fine food and music.
