  • Oh my! I've never seen one of these in color. This is obviously a cartoon that was made in the silent era, but had sound and even COLOR added. I've never seen one like that before. By the way, Mutt and Jeff DID talk in some of their early cartoons (by means of dialog bubbles in some of their cartoons), and of course they spoke in the daily newspaper strips. BTW, Mutt is actually the TALL one.

  • I have a couple of these in my collection. Do you remember when Tom and Jerry were actually two guys? They remind me of these two. I also remember a few of the old Alice cartoons where they took live action footage of a little girl and put it in with cartoons. I don't think they ever actually say which is which in these cartoons so thanks for clarifying which was which :D

  • Yes, I've got some of those Tom & Jerry cartoons somewhere. They're pretty crude, actually. The Van Beuren cartoon studio (which made those Tom & Jerry toons) was another New York production house, along with the Paul Terry studio. Of the three, Max Fleischer's was obviously the best. Mutt & Jeff of course started out as a newspaper comic, so people knew who they were. In fact, it started out as a strip called "A. Mutt" (sans Jeff) not long after the turn of the 20th century.

  • Funny story. I bought a big batch of cartoons and put in one of the disks to see if it worked. My friend was playing some 80's song behind me and I turned the cartoons down so it wouldn't interfere. It was the ep with the tuba guy (Tuba Tooter or something like that) and I look back and the entire cartoon was perfectly in sync with the music. It was freaky but so very cool :D After that we tried several of them to see if they matched up and a lot of them actually did. It was so much fun :D

  • this used to b sooooooo funny and still is...thanx for the post.

  • You are welcome, I'm glad someone besides me enjoys these =)

  • This is a bit different from the BW version, but nearly the same. I think it looks much better and richer in Kromocolor. The Phantom is a remarkable character and their use of him is great cartooning. My second M&J toon in many years, but both have been really good. The other was Soda Jerks with a totally different look and feel from this. Didn't much care for the sound track here. BTW the BW version had dialog intertitles.

  • cool, i was looking for a name for two dogs for a cartoon for my vet,, did these guys have dogs named mutt and jeff too?

  • Thumbs up if Jack Edwards brought you here!

  • These 2 remind me of Mario and Luigi.

  • reminds me of the oil slick monster that killed Tasha Yar !!!!

  • Ive been looking for this cartoon for years. I remember this was my favorite cartoon when I was young. :D Thanks for uploading it! ^^

  • I love this one! The Phantom from this has made many appearances in my own artwork :D

  • In color ?!?? I saw this same film in B/W - Perharps if the animation production has re-used the same cels and converted into colour, few years away from original B/W version to this revamped one. I have uploaded another Mutt and Jeff cartoon here as please visit ' Playing with Fire ' ( 1926 - B/W ) from Nitrate 35mm film. See it and enjoy it. Thanks.
