The intruder from this morning comes back to the nest. This time we see it is #27. The eaglet defends the nest bravely as the intruder lands on the nest twice...eventually stealing something from the side of the nest and leaving.
The intruder first appeared this morning as shown in this companion video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyNhBXR1YQk
In February, a sub-adult from the same IWS release group came to the nest, challenging K10 for the fish he caught. You can see that encounter on this video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=oFAYatJh3oc
You can read about the struggle to reintroduce America's symbol, the Bald Eagle, to the Channel Islands as well as watch this miracle of nature via live eagle-cam by going to http://www.iws.org and clicking first on 'interactive' and then choosing one of the 3 nests to view.... 2 are on Catalina Island and 1 on Santa Cruz Island or go to: http://z7.invisionfree.com/CHIL_EagleCAM/index.php?act=idx

Just seeing this for the first time.
It seems clear A-27 is there to look for food. He grabs a nestover at the end.

This, by far, one of the most fascinating videos I have seen on YT!! 5 stars!! My video is on the same chart as yours, so I wandered over!

That is one fierce little eagle!!! No wonder he/she has been so scrappy from the beginning. And I agree, where were the parents when this intruder came by?

It is a young bird trying to survive. If you watch the parents, they are wonderful animals.

Oj Jann,so many thoughts. I love how the eaglet was either biting the legs of A-27 or wondering where the "beef" was. Also that mantling look/glare was incredible. Not to mentions the rogue bird stealing part of the nest. Sheesh. Some people's kids. I predict this baby is going to thrive, survive, and bring us many babies in the future. Do you think 27 might be looking for and early mate?

Amazing! I've never seen anything like this! Where are the eaglet's parents? Why aren't they there to defend their nest and their eaglet?

LOL, what a perfect symbol for our country: a bird that steals from members of the same species.
Truthiness231 4 years ago
When you stop and think about it, there aren't many animals that won't steal from members of their own species. It's not done with malicious intent, it's a matter of survival.
