This is a basic ground striking drill we do that is taken from our grading syllabus. It has two key purposes. Firstly, it helps develop power in palm-heels and hammer fists from the top position. Secondly, it helps develop aggression and the right combative mindset (when done properly).

We typically do the drill for 60 seconds, and if people are not totally exhausted by the end of that time it means they are hitting weakly, too slowly, and that they lack the intensity and aggression required for actual conflict. It's not about fitness! The fitter people should get more done in the time frame and hence should be just as exhausted as their less fit counterparts. If you finish feeling fresh you can't claim fitness! It just shows you did not give it your all! It's a pretty simple drill and I hope it is of interest.

PS I'll look to add the more advanced versions which involve changes of position and striking from underneath in the future.

  • Yep....like it....like it a lot! Good thing is that it adds another string to the bow and in Shoto Kan that's got to be a good thing.

  • I love training like this - a lot of people don't do any padwork on the ground, which I think is pretty important. Nice drill dudeth!
