This excerpt features The Fairies by William Allingham and A Donegal Fairy by Letitia Maclintoch taken from a dramatic exploration of myths, beliefs and superstitions of the oral traditon, performed by Sancho Gallilei. Part of a full length one-man stage show that has toured throughout Ireland and to International venues including Gibraltar, Turin, and Istanbul, where it was first performed.
Hotter than a blazing turf fire and livelier than a jig a seanchaí comes leaping away from the fireside and onto the stage with a whirlwind performance of wild and witty anecdotes from the celtic-twilight-zone. This shot-gun show rifles through the vivid imagination of our forebears in a country alive with the wee folk. Recounting tall tales passed down through generations the performance illuminates the magnificent beauty in their inherent wisdom and simple innocence.
The performance celebrates the unique humour and beauty of stories and anecdotes gathered from people in rural Ireland, mostly transcribed over a century ago. Offering a colourful panorama of Irish Folklore many of these stories are found not only across the Emerald Isle, but in similar tales across the globe hinting at the universality of human experience and storytelling traditions.
This video was shot on location in Donegal with the Derryveagh Mountains in the Background, particularly striking is the table top Muckish, coming from the Irish of Pig-like.
The whin bushes are in full bloom in the foreground. Typical of the Irish landscape the whin is variously known as the gorse bush or furse bush in different areas of the country.
Thanks to Eoin Dillon of Kila for music from the Uillean Pipes, the track is The Siege of Carrickfinn International Airport from Kila's brilliant second album Tog E Go Bog E.
