After several requests, I decided to make a follow up video to one I made a couple years ago pertaining to my double wall alcohol stove for backpacking/camping. This is just a run-through of how it's made. I did not go through the exact measurements because it varies according to your preference and style/brand of cans you choose to use. Either way, hopefully this video will help shed some light on how this little backpacking stove is made. If you have any questions, feel free to post here or head over to www.thelosthiker.com and post up your question there.

  • I built one, and it works! Slight design change! Use a red bull can for inner cylindar, 2, 25oz. cans for the outer parts. Critical! : cut the red bull can just under factory lip seal, keeping the shoulder on, it fits perfect inside bottom (now the topof the burner)

  • @rainbowboa100 Nice, thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to try that!

  • Whats the ratio of heat to time it burns? Great vid.

  • @Theoutdoorsguy1 Good question, to get things a little more approximate I need to measure burn times per ounce for all of my stoves. One thing that needs to be noted though is it will largely depend on the ambient temperature where you're operating your stove and the actual design (number of jets, etc). To give you an idea though, on a usual overnight or weekend trip, I take about 4 oz of fuel with me. I boil water for breakfast and dinner for two days and usually have a little left over.

  • I find it interesting that you say your penny stove is more efficient; i take it that the advantage of the side burner type is you can put the pot directly on top of the stove.

  • @FLHTom With the penny stove, there is more heat being allowed towards the center of the pot which makes better use of the heat that is being created, whereas with the side jet, the flames are strictly limited to the outer part of the bottom.

  • You have a very good tutorial here. Thank you for taking the time.

  • @jaybiscut07 cover stove with something to restrict oxygen to it (e.g. cover stove with another soda can with top removed by a can opener)

  • I'm so friction confused what part do u cut off? The part u drink out of or the bottom?

  • thank you sir for the info,,,

  • @jaybiscut07 just blow real hard thats how i do it

  • how do you extinguish on of these?

  • Would fiberglass insulation around the outside of the inner wall be beneficial to fuel consumption?
