DO YOU EARN $40,000 A YEAR?

According to Speaker Hastert, you don't pay taxes.In the debate on the budget last night, Speaker Hastert said this, "I've heard some arguments on the other side of the aisle saying, well, if you had -- if you earn $40,000 a year, you wouldn't get a very big tax cut. Well, folks, if you earn $40,000 a year and have a family of two, you don't pay any taxes. So you probably -- if you don't pay any taxes, you are not going to get a big tax cut. Now, if you earn $1 million a year, you are going to pay about $400,000 of taxes. Maybe you'll get a $40,000 tax cut, maybe. But look at the math. But I am saying, those are relative things."

Someone who earns 40k per year does pay taxes - and the govt earns interest on the taxes they pay. Everyone who works pays taxes. Someone earning significantly more has the ability to use more loopholes, tax shelters, etc - as such, they end up paying A LOT less than $400k in taxes. Don't lie to us, Speaker, we're not fools.

@coryc10: What exactly do they contribute? Seems to me they take. They don't pay workers a living wage, benefits. They try to get out of providing safe working conditions. They overcharge customers. They take advantage of foreign workers. And then they want to pay no taxes? It's called the return of the aristocracy.

Why should someone that doesn't pay anything into the income tax receive anything back? You don't deserve it. It is not a right.
