Feodor Chaliapin sings a Russian folksong, "The Lovely Night", recorded at Moscow for HMV in 1910. Unaccompanied. The copy is a Opera DIsc record from early 1920s - in a perfect condition. I explained about the origin of these Opera Discs on my posting of Caruso's 1904 version of Pearl Fishers aria.
Despite the fact it is an acoustic recording from 100 years ago, the recording is really astonishing! Full of emotion, perfect breath control, and lovely high notes. Chaliapin was 36 years old then, and several of his very best recordings were made during this time. and I believe very few Bassos of today can sing like this.
Played on my modern equipment, and applied my 'fake-stereo' program. (To listen this properly, please activate 480p Function or add "&fmt=18" at the end of URL)

Feodor Ivanovich Chaliapin (Russian: Фёдор Ива́нович Шаля́пин, Fyodor Ivanovich Shalyapin; February 13 [O.S. February 1] 1873 – April 12, 1938) was a Russian opera singer. The possessor of a large and expressive bass voice, he enjoyed an important international career at major opera houses and is often credited with establishing the tradition of naturalistic acting in his chosen art form.
