After the death of E. J. Bellocq (1873-1949), most of his work was destroyed. However, a collection of glass negatives was later found concealed in a sofa. These were photographs of prostitutes who worked in the legalised brothels of Storyville around 1912 (Storyville was the prostitution district of New Orleans, Louisiana, from 1897 through 1917). Some were nude, some dressed respectably, others posed as if acting a mysterious narrative. In 1971 a selection of the photographs were published in a book entitled Storyville Portraits. They had been made into distinctive prints by Lee Friedlander, using the whole of the negatives. These photographs were immediately acclaimed for their unique poignancy and beauty.

  • there's some saggy tits in this video.

  • How did I get here..? Oh yeah, I searched my name.

  • Some of these photos I've never seen. What I think made Bellocq a great artist how he managed to capture the complexity of the prostitutes lives.

IMHO the music doesn't fit. Why not something like Louis Armstrong Basin St. Blues or Jelly Roll Morton who actually played in the Storyville Brothels?

  • Great Video

  • @09atthomas Tried to reach you last evening-Storyville is a good fascination. Farewell to storyville clips are available on Youtube-Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong. As I recall Louis' mother worked in Storyville. The house where he was born was torn down because somebody didn't want that part of his legacy to endure. I think the navy was sent in to close down Storyville and all that was left was a few old hookers who were rousted out of their cribs.

  • Are these all pictures of women from Storyville in New Orleans? If so, could you please tell me where you got them. I am a student doing a project on Storyville for my New ORleans Literature class. Thanks

  • Maravilloso material, gracias por ponerlo a disposición de todos. Thank's for the post.

  • very interesting rescue *****
