There are a lot of opportunities outside of the United States. Berkshire Hathaway needs to buy large companies, so India is an obvious place to look. This isn't a trip to learn about the Indian culture or to do philanthropy. It is more a trip to find investment opportunities.

There are rules about the percentage that Berkshire can own of various types of companies. It can only own 26% of an insurance company, so that isn't the most attractive sector for Berkshire in India. You should always invest in what you understand and stay within your circle of competence. Very few people can jump in and out of businesses successfully.

Buffett probably should have come to India a long time ago, but he has always been a stay at home type of fellow. Buffett has investments all over the world, including Japan. But there have been crises all the time no matter what country you live and invest in.
