From her brand new CD "Lishkare," Meena Batish sings this beautiful and centuries old Punjabi folk song questioning the deep friendship and bond that exists between a mother and her daughter. It is a sad and emotional time when a young daughter that has been born and raised in her family with such love and care suddenly finds herself uprooted, and married off to many times to a complete stranger making the daughter question the fairness and the validity of such a catastrophic event thus making her chant the words "Thiyaan Kyun Jammiyaan Ni Maa" meaning "why did you give birth to me when you were to eventually abandon me and in a way banish me from my own house into the strange house and surroundings of her husband while the new wives of her brothers (bhabiyaan) are now the new daughters of the house and who are treated better and with more respect than her. A powerful and daunting set of questions that have left many a family in tears over the centuries and lifetimes. These haunting words and the new melody and arrangement that they are set by Meena and Ashwin and the necessary touch that enhances these age old questions and brings this song and its message to you. We hope you will enjoy this upload. The CD has 10 songs in total. It is a special tribute to the memory of our father Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish, the legendary composer, music director and playback singer of the Golden era of Bollywood. One of the songs "Haaldeyaa Mermaa Dholaa" has a beautifully rendered free vocal improvisation by Panditji that puts a stunning end to the song and the album. A must hear!

The musicians accompanying Ashwin and Meena are Bill Walker on guitar (although he is not in the video due to the camera angle), Ashwin's son Keshav Batish who at a tender age of 13 has mastered so much in music. He has studied with his grandfather Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish and his father Pandit Ashwin Batish and his love for music is evident in his dedication and commitment. He is also very good at playing tabla, santoor, sitar etc.

On upright bass is our great friend and one of the world's best bass players Myron Dove. Myron's achievements are legendary with his years of performances with Santana, Robben Ford, Tony Furtado, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Narada Michael Walden, Herbie Hancock, Angela Bofill, Buddy Guy, Vince Gill, Wayne Shorter, Amy Grant, John Lee Hooker, Jeffrey Osborne, Boz Scaggs, Steve Winwood, Stevie Wonder, Rodney Franklin, Ronnie Montrose, Tony Williams, Mark Russo, Patti Austin, Al Jarreau, Philip Bailey, Lisa Fischer, Meena Batish, Ashwin Batish and Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish.
