It is Carnaval time in Austin, TX and The Austin Samba School is rehearsing for their show at Carnaval Brasileiro 2011. The KeepAustinHappening Crew visited one of these rehearsals to see how things were going.

What's happening in Austin? Hehe. Well, if you dont know about Austin's annual Carnaval Brasiliero, then you are in for a delicious delight of the senses. Of the many Austin music festivals and celebrations that define our fair city, Carnaval Brasiliero is surely the finest. Austin's first official celebration of the Brazilian Mardi Gras occurred some 30 years ago when Brazilian students hungry for their annual celebration of life decided to share a bit of their native spice with our capital city. Austin hasn't been the same since. Today, production is second to none, and leaves the audience in a daze. Audience is hardly the word to describe the celebrants, as this participatory experience means everyone is a part of the show. That's not to say it's all hedonism and debauchery. The Austin Samba School prepares year round for Carnaval. As Carnaval approaches, the anticipation builds, and finally we see the school's preparation unfold and culminate with their amazing performance. Drums pound. Dancers swoon. The crowd climaxes in ecstasy and the party explodes with delight!

Now, the excitement is at a fever, and tonight will certainly be a night to remember. Or will it? While we can tell you for certain what's happening in Austin, we can't promise that you will remember. For as the music dims and the laughter fades, as you drift out into the cool, starry night, legend has it that invisible gnomes will zap your memory. So go out, be silly, and have not a care at all, for you can do anything you like; it's Carnaval!
