  • So your drilling a pilot hole down then drilling a much larger hole upward pulling on the bit? Thats what it looks like. I have never seen this method before. How did the large bit get into the cavity? Part of a mine and you drove it in?

  • @lastoftheamericans1 Yes, you need a mine or tunnel underneath, both to bring the large reaming drill head, and to excavate the material... This hole was 4 meters in diameter and 450 meters deep, and the material swells to 150%, so there is a lot of material that has to be excavated. This method is quite common in mines, tunnels, or hydro electric constructions...

  • is that the very bottom?

  • @lokeycmos Yes, i am standing on the bottom, 455 meters from the surface.

  • let me guess...this huge hole was constructed to throw rocks into so the boys would have something to do during lunch break other than eating stale sandwiches and warm soda pop

  • @solar793 No, the office actually had BEER!

  • @fredrikjohansson Beer and Drills? And deep holes.

Good combination! What could possibly go wrong!?

  • It looks like an air or service shaft for a mine or road tunnel. This type of drill is called a Raise borer in Australia.

A small 8 - 10" hole is drilled down and the larger head is assembled on the bottom of the shaft within the drive. It is then put under tension and rotated drilling a large hole back to the surface. This ensures a nice straight hole.

  • keep it out of reach of children!
