What it would have cost us to publicly fund independent media that would have prevented the invasion of Iraq wouldn't amount, in a year, to what we spend on a month of occupying that country. David Swanson says journalists from government funded media are better off. He also says that instead of bank bailouts the government should be funding journalism in schools.

  • This guy is either uninformed, or disingenuous. He doesn't understand what "Freedom of the press" means. He's so ass-backward that I don't even care to comment on most of what he said.

...but I'll inform him that thanks to the internet, investigative journalists these days are normal citizens.

  • Okay, the way I hear what you're saying now is public sponser... that's BBC like our PBS here, who strictly rely on donations from the public. Therein lies the confusion. I see a big difference between a government funded network versus a public funded network. Regardless, the interview was confusing without those terms clarified.

  • if it is run by an oligarchy, then it is an oligarchy.

I am interested in what is ACTUALLY happening- not what pieces of paper from 200+ years ago say.

  • Fox news was the PRIMARY cheerleader for the unnecessary, wasteful, murderous invasion of Iraq.

There are reports of other media outlets being afraid to challenge the narrative because they didn't want to seem like they were anti-American when fox was waving the flag.

As a result, I could argue that our corporate media leads directly to corporate resource wars, that drain our treasury and keep us from making any progress domestically.

Our media costs the taxpayers a LOT of money.

  • I'm for non government run press. But laws changing ownership to bar news companies from being corporations. And strict conflict of interest laws would certainly help things.

  • Technically we're considered a plutocracy , or a polygarcy , that's , ya gotta admit , it sounds a little fancier .
