@xxxBAINxxx Nonsense.Mrs Thatcher fought vigorously for democracy. Remember "NO, NO, NO"? that related to the ceding of sovereign power to the European Comission.

@antncs6 But empowering how many individuals ? The CEOs, the shareholders? We've seen in the last 3 years that the free market doesn't work - or hasn't the recession touched you ? Read EbsNhexz's comment above and listen to the video from 4.00 - 5.00mins again.

@antncs6 It sounds like you are analysing it by the views of classical liberalism? To an extent what you say it's true, but privatisation also leads to high economic power and influence which is held by comities which the people didn't vote for.

What Benn does not appear to realize in his Critique of the Thatcher Revolution is that By Privatization and shrinking the state they were empowering the individual in being able to Live Their own lives rather than be told what to do by Government

They believed intuitively? The maker of this film is obviously not acquainted with the Hindu worldview.

I am a conservative, but very sympathetic to his critique of the EU, although not neccesarily because it is a capitalist plot, but because it is anti-democratic.

@Tougemaster06 Actually if your looking for a generic term to describe Tony Benn hes a Social Democrat. Democratic Socialists are those who seek to overthrow an existing system through revolution and establish a totally new regime (like the Bolsheviks in the Russian revolution), Social democrats work within the existing system and seek to create a better more democratic society through reform. Think of it this way: Social Democracy - SD - Should be Done, Democratic Socialism - DS - is Damn Silly

Thatcherism was less of a reaction to economic strife than we are told iit was, to quote eric evans "The sick man of europe, neded thatcherism no more than a man with a cold needs a leg amputated"

Tony Benn is not telling the full story. He needs to explain why the welfare state was wound back by Thatcher and Reagan: because it was simply not economically sustainable!
This doco is like Benn's British version of Zinn's "A People's History of the United States". Different country, but just as fascinating and important.
