The death of Osama bin Laden is being celebrated around the world, and in Rhode Island.

Once news began to spread that U.S. special forces in Pakistan took out the notorious terror leader, impromptu celebrations broke out across the country and in Rhode Island.

Dozens of students at Providence College converged on campus, cheeringand waving flags in celebration of bin Laden's death. They joined the thousands of revelers who flooded Pennsylvania Ave. in front of the White House; New York City's Times Square; and Ground Zero, where thousands of people were killed on Sept. 11, 2001.

"The news of Osama bin Laden's death at the hands of our armed forces is both a strategic and symbolic victory for the United States," Congressman Jim Langevin said in a statement. "Like so many millions of Americans, I vividly remember the shock and anguish that I felt on September 11. We are finally closing a chapter on a terrible moment in US history when thousands of innocent Americans were targeted and killed by terrorists led by this man who had nothing but hate in his heart."

"This is a tremendous intelligence achievement," Senator Jack Reed added. "It is a testament to the dedication of those who carried out the mission as well as the resolve and leadership of President Obama and his national security team. Bin Laden murdered thousands of innocent men, women, and children and today he was brought to justice."

"I join the citizens of our nation and freedom loving people around the world in celebrating President Obama's announcement that Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind of more than a decade of attacks on the United States and its allies, including the horrific attacks on our nation on September 11, 2001, is now dead," Congressman David Cicilline said in a statement.
