An interesting tip I found recently on how to enable Mac OS X's built in iTunes dock notifications.

NOTE: So far, people seem to say this feature no longer works in the new OS X Mountain Lion, but Snow Leopard and Lion still seem to retain the functionality.
However, if you have Mountain Lion, give it a try anyway and comment below with your results.

Open terminal and paste in these commands one-by-one, hitting enter each time:

defaults write com.apple.dock itunes-notifications -bool TRUE
defaults write com.apple.dock notification-always-show-image -bool TRUE
killall Dock

Enter these three commands one-by-one to disable the notifications:

defaults delete com.apple.dock itunes-notifications
defaults delete com.apple.dock notification-always-show-image
killall Dock
