In a recent interview about his new book Decoded, Jay Z expressed that he regrets past misogynistic lyrics. What does this mean? Does it matter? Here is the reaction of some fans (FAANS!) in one West Philadelphia living room.

  • "The issue for me when thinking about a public figure is never really, “does this person feel sincerely about what he or she represents.” But the fact that he’s able to examine the kinds of dynamics that were present in his earlier work in such an unbiased way is a definite sign of a more conscious way of operating, for what that’s worth. The real issue is not whether he conquers his private demons, but that by making his struggle public, he invites us to take part in it." - a friend of mine

  • @tonylove16 , thanks! lol. i agree... he probably won't become a force behind it, and to expect/ask him to do that might be naive.

did you all have your event yet? id like to hear more about. good luck! and thanks for organizing something like that. I'm curious to hear how the fishbowl exercise goes. I think its a great idea.

  • You guys have a really nice house.

I agree with you guys about what Jay-Z is doing--maturing and regretting. He's not going to become a force behind it.

I'm in California--I go to UC Berkeley--and my group Cal Students for Hip Hop is organizing an event that will address misogyny in hip hop.

One of the ideas that came up was that at some point in the meeting ( not the whole time) we have the women sit in the center and talk about it and have the guys sit on the periphery and listen up.
