HaiHaiJo, it's because of Hong Kong's return to China (香港回归）in 1997。 Everyone thought the Chinese government was going to make the Southerners start speaking Mandarin instead of Cantonese. So everyone studied Mandarin. After HK's return, everyone knew how to speak Mandarin, so more and more Mandarin speaking people showed up in HK and southern China - so now after a while pretty much everyone speaks Mandarin there.
