Talking about Lavender today because along the Central Coast it's so popular and as we get into the Summer and the Spring it starts to push. Just like this English hybrid Jean Davis, as you can see, last years growth is giving birth to these new, beautiful long stem buds that are going to provide lots of beautiful smelling, wonderful, medicinal lavender blooms.

There's a million varieties to choose from. Some of my absolute favorites are found at your local nursery. "Otta Quast" is one to look for, "Goodwin Creek" is another favorite. Although, I'll tell you, Spanish lavender is just about my most favorite out there.

The cool thing about Spanish lavender is that it has these beautiful purple leaves, they're like little pedals that pop up at the top, just gorgeous.

And the oil, oh my gosh, it's intoxicating, there's a lot of oil in these babies. Really good for things like acne and stuff like that. Anyhow, lavender is definitely celebrated and it's easy to grow. Drought tolerant, a Mediterranean plant.

When you do get it going, remember it takes about 6 months for a plant to get established. So get it in the ground with a good planting mix, throw in the starter fertilizer. I'm always a fan of the mycorrhizae, I talk about that in some of my other talks. These little tea bag sachets, this is my starter fertilizer. I drop that into the bucket or into the ground and before you know it, you've got an established plant that's going to perform for you for a long time. So enjoy!
