The fiddlers sold at most pet stores are semi-aquatic, ergo prefer to come out on land each day.

So I put an air-filled gallon fishbowl at the bottom of my 55 gallon tank, held down by gravel and a heavy piece of petrified wood...

The fiddler crab climbs out into the air, deep underwater, and does his semaphore.

In this video, you see him, plus a guest ensemble of 3 African cichlids (red zebra, mosobo, and blue acai), 3 south american cichlids (jack dempsey, severum, and convict), 3 giant danios, 3 bala sharks, a leaf fish, and a pleco...and yes, they all get along famously in the same tank.

  • people actually sell these in pet stores? I could catch 100-200 of these little guys in less than 12 hours where I live and make a killing if sold somewhere else?

  • @bderousse100 If you take them to another part of the country, sure. If you live near them, they're probably pretty cheap where you are.

  • crap, i just found out that fiddler crabs are brackish water crabs... my other fish cant handle the salt in the water either.... damn... didnt want to have to get another tank just for the crab...

he likes it in the tank...but is it true he wont survive without air and salt in his water?

  • @MissAllWheelDrive What fish do you have, that can't handle brackish water? Almost all popular "freshwater" fish thrive in it, including community fish and cichlids.

  • how large is an adult bala shark?

  • @Mullinator0001 Oh, they're huge. Bigger than most adult cichlids, about a foot long.

  • @OctopusCabbage well, yeah, that's kinda what I was referring to. But air pumps and bubbler stones both work fine.

  • @Pop12646Okami Could you potentially just put a bubbler in there and have that pump air in?

  • Actually, this is a bad idea, unless you have an airdrome pumping new air in at all times... Either way, it looks cute. :)

  • this is a genius idea! ty for the amazing idea :)

  • it runs out of oxygen eventually doesent it? still nice tho :D

  • cool
