YouTube user HORTICULTUREVIDEOS presents a fast and easy way to make Sorghum Syrup. Sorghum syrup is easy to make and it is delicious. In this clip we are using the PITEBA oil extractor to press the juice out of the sorghum stalks.
Sorghum stalks can be juiced and boiled down into syrup.
To make sorghum syrup, we'll first need to mash, crush or press the juice out of the stalks. This could be done with an electric juice extractor or a wheat-grass juicer. We're using an oil extractor which is similar to a wheat-grass juicer. Hand powered tools are great for learning about the basic mechanics of bigger machines.

Small pieces of cane are fed into the juicer while the crank is turning. A green juice will begin flow out of the sorghum stems. At this stage the juice is already quite sweet and aromatic. The crushed canes or "cake" can then be composted, fed to animals, or soaked in hot water to extract more sugar.

Now we can simmer down the sorghum juice on a stove top. Pour the juice in a pot and set the burner on medium high. Small bubbles and steam will rise from the liquid. The water is carried away with the steam and syrup will form as the sugar gets more concentrated. We need to stir the thickening juice regularly to keep the syrup from burning.

As soon as the liquid drips slowly like syrup we can turn off the heat. Keep in mind that the syrup will get thicker as it cools down. Pour the syrup off into a glass jar.
We can also cap the syrup while it's still hot. This will create a vacuum seal as the syrup cools and increase it's shelf life.
The dark green syrup tastes similar to molasses with a citrus-like aroma. This syrup can be used on our own sorghum pancakes, poured over ice cream and could even be further processed into granulated sugar. Perhaps in the future we'll be seeing more of this extremely versatile world food crop.

  • @oldtimeway1 nah i say ther misser, how come you be wantin' a' be so disserspec'ful of this here fine feller jes' tryin' a' do things the ol' way an all instead a' bein another sheep tha' jes goes to tha' store fer ever'thang he needs wha's wrong with you ha' you bin bab-tized in pickle juice you seem mighty sour ta' me.

    It's not a bad video, although the guy's voice is kind of annoying, and yeah, I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be green.

  • @oldtimeway1 How do you make sorghum or suggest others make it? They are going to be putting high taxes on white sugar and I know a lot of people will be looking for alternatives. A lot of folks will appreciate any info on this. Thanks so much.

  • Land sakes, go buy a jar of sorghum. It takes so much juice to make syrup. In fact, when it gets to the syrup stage it shouldn't be "Light green" like you all claim.
