~ THE BALLAD OF SPRING HILL ~ (Seegar-McColl)
"There were three major coal mining disasters in Canada in 1891,1956 and 1958 in different mines within the Springhill coalfield, near the town of Springhill in cumberland County, near Nova Scotia. Following the third disaster in 1958 the companies shut it`s mining operations in Springhill and they never reopened. Today the mine properties, among the greatest in the world (2 miles) and filled with water, are owned by the government of Nova Scotia and provide Springhill`s idustrial park with a source of geothermal heat".
The first mining disaster killed 125 men. The second killed 35 men that both were due to explosions and fire. The third disaster was caused by an underground quake that killed 74 miners. The accumulation of all three disasters made news thoughout the world.
Peter, Paul and Mary sing about the 1958 quake disaster. Song written by Seegar-McColl.

I remember this song from a PP&M album from my childhood, and I haven't heard it in 40 years!
But it made such an impression on me at that time that I remember it clearly.
A chilling song, beautifully done.

I often think of Mary about now. It was the first tribute (Change) I did in honor of her birth Nov. 9th on megchristianfan channel.

My father was pulled out twice from the Westvaco Coal and Trona mines in Rock Springs Wyoming. This is a great song, but hard to listen to.
