Everyone was stunned over Gary Moeller leaving and the circumstances around it more so than Carr being named interim coach.
Lloyd's interim title was removed after the Purdue game. Good thing too because half the players on the team threatened to quit if Carr was not named permanent head coach.

I'm an Iowa Fan, but I remember watching the end of this game and praying Scott Dreisbach would find a way to win this game - he was a good QB until he broke his pinky then Brian Griese took the job and you all know the rest.
Michigan Historian - do you think Scott Driesbach would have been a four year starter at Michigan if he had not had the injury problems he did?

I don't see why not. I forgot how good his record was as a starter.
Lloyd also could have made Dreisbach the starter for the 98 season but went with Tom Brady instead. Go figure.

I was at the this game. It was one of the best games I ever saw. Not quite as exciting as AC's catch (I was at that game too) vs IN, but a great one nonetheless..

Lucky you. I was born 3 months after AC's catch against Indiana. But I get chills every I see it.

This game epitomized LC's coaching career at Michigan. The man truly was at his best when his back was against the wall.
What a way to bookend a coaching career, open up with a thriller like this one, and close it out with a win as a decided underdog, with nobody giving the man a chance. God Bless you Lloyd, and thank you for 13 wonderful years.

But honestly if I was the ref, I would still give it to him even if he was out just for the effort and the drama of the game. ;)

I WAS THERE! In the corner where Mercury Hayes caught the pass. I was in second grade. I remember how crazy the big house went!

@Knightmessenger
I was to Hayes' left facing his side and back. I couldn't see his right foot, but I saw that he had his left foot inbounds. So with that and the replay angle, he had both feet in and it would have stood in the pros, too.

from your view, did it look like Hayes had the foot in?
Every time I see this play at full speed from any angle, I am amazed that the field judge got the call correct. It was so close.
